"I remember the hands that made me. I do not remember why they stopped trembling." โ carved into the door of Mara Vell's house
Lore & Description
Appearance
The Unmelted Mourner is a towering snowman of three uneven spheres, packed hard enough to resemble old marble. Its surface is gray-white and veined with faint blue ice, while twig arms have thickened into branching, knotted limbs that twitch when no one is looking. Two black coal eyes burn with dim amber light, and a carrot nose has shriveled into a hooked, rootlike protrusion. A child's red scarf circles its neck, stiff with frost and stained at the ends. Beneath gaps in its snow, something glossy and dark pulses like a second skeleton trying to grow outward.
Behavior & Origins
The creature was built by a grieving child named Mara Vell after her older brother, Tomas, died during a blizzard. Mara packed snow around his coat, buttons, and favorite scarf, then begged the winter not to take another member of her family. Something answered. The snowman now wanders the abandoned village of Bellwether Hollow, protecting Mara's empty house and collecting objects that remind it of the dead. It knows that the thing inside it is not Tomas, and fears that each passing winter gives that thing more of its thoughts. A concrete way to reach it is to bring Tomas's missing tin wind-up bird from the frozen mill; the mourner wants to hear the song it associates with being a family. If shown the bird, it may allow itself to be destroyedโor ask the characters to kill the growing presence before it becomes fully awake.
Running The Unmelted Mourner
Tactics
The Unmelted Mourner opens with Whiteout of Grief if it can catch several enemies in the cone, then uses Branching Arm to restrain the most dangerous melee combatant while hammering another with Coal-Fists. It uses Gather the Fallen Snow to reposition through difficult terrain and keeps frightened enemies within 10 feet whenever possible. When bloodied, it becomes more aggressive and uses Remember Me against the character who shows the strongest grief or affection. It fights to the death near Mara's house, but retreats toward the frozen mill if presented with Tomas's wind-up bird or if reduced below 20 hit points without a clear threat to its keepsakes.
DM Tips
- Telegraph its danger with a trail of perfectly preserved footprints, children's toys frozen into snowbanks, and villagers who insist the snowman has begun whispering in voices not its own.
- Roleplay it with a soft, halting child's voice that occasionally slips into a deeper, wet rasp; have it pause before saying names, as though searching through someone else's memories.
- For a weaker party, remove the extra cold damage from Snowbound Defiance and reduce Whiteout of Grief to 4d8 cold damage; for a stronger party, let the mourner use Whiteout of Grief once without recharge when Snowbound Defiance activates.
- Make the emotional solution matter: recovering the wind-up bird, speaking Mara's name, or returning Tomas's coat can change the encounter from a straightforward fight into a desperate rescue.
Loot
- Tomas's Red Scarf — A child's scarf that never becomes wet or warm. Wrapped around a weapon, it grants advantage on one saving throw against fear each dawn, then loses its frost for a day.
- Cracked Heart-Coal — The coal from the mourner's chest, split down the middle and warm to the touch. It contains a faint, unfamiliar heartbeat and may be used as a focus for divination concerning Bellwether Hollow.
- Tin Wind-Up Bird — Found near the mourner's lair or recovered from the frozen mill. When wound, it plays three notes that calm the creature and reveal a hidden memory of Mara and Tomas.
