"It guards the shape of a promise, though the promise has long since gone." โ Ilyra Venn, last entry in her workshop journal
Lore & Description
Appearance
This humanoid statue is carved from pale gray marble veined with rust-red mineral streaks. One side of its face is smooth and serene, while the other remains a rough block pierced by a single dark eye. Its shoulders are asymmetrical, its fingers end in narrow stone wedges, and fresh chips glitter around its feet. It carries stolen chisels thrust into cracks along its torso, each one worn nearly smooth by its own desperate workmanship.
Behavior & Origins
A sculptor named Ilyra Venn abandoned the statue after her patron died and the commission became meaningless. The unfinished figure continued to move whenever the workshop was empty, taking chisels from the walls and carving itself according to a memory it could not understand. It now guards an empty plinth, a sealed niche, or a bare patch of floor where the thing it was built to protect once stood. The self-carver cannot explain what is missing, but it attacks anyone who approaches and sometimes whispers, in the sculptor's voice, "Not yet." A useful hook is the vanished final subject: Ilyra's lost daughter, a stolen saint's relic, or merely the name of a person erased from history.
Running Unfinished Self-Carver
Tactics
The self-carver opens with Stolen Chisel against a distant intruder, then advances to use Multiattack against the nearest creature approaching its protected site. It uses Guard the Absence to intercept anyone who crosses the final few feet and saves Abrupt Recarving for when two or more foes surround it. If reduced below 5 hit points, it retreats to the empty protected space and fights to the death unless someone convincingly claims to know what once belonged there.
DM Tips
- Telegraph it with fresh marble dust, the sound of rhythmic chiseling from an empty room, and a trail of stolen tools arranged like breadcrumbs.
- Roleplay it with unfinished gestures and abrupt pauses; it may point at empty space, then attack when asked what it is protecting.
- Let players learn its fixation through murals, workshop notes, or its repeated whisper rather than requiring a fight to discover the protected site's significance.
- For a weaker party, remove its damage resistance; for a stronger party, give it 5 additional hit points and let Carved to Continue restore 5 temporary hit points instead of 3.
Loot
- Ilyra's Last Chisel — A silver-capped masonry chisel, worn nearly blunt. Its handle bears the initials IV and reveals faintly glowing lettering when held near the protected site.
- Marble Face Fragment — A broken piece of the self-carver's unfinished face. When placed against the correct empty niche, it shows a fleeting image of what once stood there.
