"Please lower your voice. The shelves are listening." โ Archivist Mara Vell, final note from the Bellweather Athenaeum
Lore & Description
Appearance
The Afterhours Hush resembles a tall, faceless silhouette wrapped in layers of dark blue and sepia paper. Its body is thin as a bookmark, with jointed limbs that bend like folded corners and long tendrils made from dripping black ink. Where its head should be is a smooth rectangle of parchment bearing a single closing-hours stamp. Loose pages orbit it without rustling, and every motion seems to occur in the instant between one heartbeat and the next.
Behavior & Origins
The Afterhours Hush is the territorial silence left behind when a library closes: the hush of abandoned reading rooms, dust settling on forgotten shelves, and words waiting patiently in the dark. It feeds on noise, interruption, and careless handling of books, but it is not mindlessly cruel. It considers itself the last librarian of any collection it inhabits. The archivist Mara Vell first encountered one in the Bellweather Athenaeum, where it now protects a locked cabinet containing a book that remembers every person who has ever read it. Destroying the Hush merely causes it to relocate, usually to the nearest place where knowledge is stored. It can be permanently bound only by restoring a stolen or deliberately misfiled book to its rightful shelf and speaking the library's original closing oath aloud in its territory.
Running The Afterhours Hush
Tactics
The Afterhours Hush opens with Silencing Fold to divide the party and disable verbal spellcasters, then uses Between the Stacks to strike from unexpected angles. It targets the loudest creature with Borrowed Word and uses Shush whenever someone attempts a spell or raises an alarm. When reduced below half its hit points, it retreats through shelves and papers, attacking only isolated targets; it never fights to the death unless the party threatens a book or object it considers part of its collection.
DM Tips
- Telegraph its presence with books opening by themselves, muffled footsteps, ink appearing on blank pages, and characters hearing their own thoughts spoken from nearby shelves.
- Play it as a stern, territorial librarian: it communicates through projected words, stamped notices, and gestures for silence rather than a spoken voice.
- If the party destroys it, immediately describe a distant library bell and a single blank page appearing in a new archive; this makes relocation feel like a consequence rather than a reset.
- For a weaker party, reduce its hit points to 55 and lower the Silencing Fold saving throw to DC 12; for a stronger party, let it use Between the Stacks twice per round or give it a second reaction each round.
Loot
- The Unreturned Library Card — A cracked ivory card bearing the name of an unknown patron. When placed in any library book, it reveals the location of the nearest hidden compartment or restricted collection.
- Blank Closing Notice — A sheet of heavy blue paper stamped with midnight's date. Writing a creature's name on it causes that creature's voice to become a whisper for 1 hour, once, before the notice crumbles.
- Ink-Damp Bookmark — This black ribbon is always cool and wet. It points toward the last place the Afterhours Hush relocated, making it an excellent lead for a recurring urban mystery.
