"Please remain seated until the princess returns." โ painted on a brass plaque beneath the horse's saddle
Lore & Description
Appearance
The Last Carousel Horse is a life-sized wooden charger carved from dark walnut and painted in flaking crimson, cream, and turquoise. Its glass eyes glow with a warm carnival-gold light, though one is cracked and leaks a thin line of blue paint. A tarnished brass pole runs through its back, ending in a broken crown-shaped finial. Its mane is made from faded ribbons and horsehair, and its hooves spark against stone as if striking the brass platform of a long-vanished carousel.
Behavior & Origins
The horse once belonged to the Moonwheel Fair, where it carried children around a painted castle while a girl named Maribel sang from the center platform. When the fair burned, the carousel was dismantled and sold, but this horse walked away during the night. It now wanders from pasture to pasture, persuading real horses to follow it and arranging them in silent circles around the ruins of Bellweather Green. It believes Maribel is still waiting inside the carousel's nonexistent castle and attacks anyone who disturbs the empty center. The horse wants only to complete the ride with thirteen riders, because that was the number promised to Maribel before the fire.
Running The Last Carousel Horse
Tactics
The Last Carousel Horse opens with Enlist the Living, attempting to seize nearby horses and create a moving ring around the battlefield. It uses Round and Round to knock characters prone, then tramples them while its recruited equines block escape routes. When badly wounded, it becomes frantic, repeatedly using Painted Bite against whoever appears to be the group's leader. It fights to the death if anyone approaches the empty center of its imagined carousel, but stops attacking a character who convincingly promises to find Maribel.
DM Tips
- Telegraph the creature with distant carousel music, circular hoofprints, and real horses standing motionless around an empty patch of ground.
- Play its voice as a cheerful fairground announcement interrupted by splintering wood and grief; it addresses adventurers as riders, ushers, or people who are late.
- For a weaker party, remove Round and Round's damage and let Enlist the Living affect only one equine at a time; for a stronger party, begin the encounter with three charmed horses already circling the battlefield.
- The encounter can be resolved without combat if the characters recover Maribel's scorched ribbon from the old fairground and place it on the empty carousel pole.
Loot
- Maribel's Brass Ticket — A blackened admission token fused beneath the horse's saddle. It bears the Moonwheel Fair emblem and points toward the ruins of the original fairground when held near a lost child or abandoned amusement.
- Ribbon Mane — A handful of enchanted red-and-gold ribbons from the horse's mane. Tied to a bridle, they grant a mount advantage on saving throws against being frightened for 7 days.
- The Thirteenth Rosette — A faded rosette hidden inside the horse's wooden chest. It is embroidered with the name Maribel and may allow the Last Carousel Horse's spirit to finally leave its empty ride.
