No one passes without owing something. Not even the road. โ scratched into a rusted payment sign
Lore & Description
Appearance
The Unpaid Toll is a weather-blackened toll booth mounted on cracked stone wheels, its faded red-and-white stripes flaking into patterns that resemble veins. A brass bell hangs above its ticket window, though no hand pulls its cord. The barrier arm has become a long, jointed limb of splintered wood, and a tarnished coin slot opens and closes like a hungry mouth. Behind the glass, receipts drift in the darkness like pale moths. Recently, a single blue eye has appeared beneath the counter, blinking whenever someone speaks its name.
Behavior & Origins
Once called Turnpike Nine, the booth was abandoned after the road it guarded was rerouted and its keeper vanished. For decades it continued collecting imaginary fares from ghosts, animals, and travelers who never noticed the old road beneath the weeds. Now its records contain impossible entries: debts owed by the dead, interest charged to unborn children, and payments made in memories. The booth knows it is becoming something else, but cannot decide whether it is becoming a person, a monster, or the road itself. It wants someone to give it a true name and formally sign the deed to its patch of land. A practical hook is the missing ledger of Mayor Elian Voss, whose name appears as the booth's oldest and largest debtor.
Running The Unpaid Toll
Tactics
The Unpaid Toll begins by declaring a checkpoint and demanding payment, marking anyone who refuses as a Debtor. It uses Receipt Hook to drag distant targets into reach, then batters them with Barrier Slams while Compound Interest punishes anyone who lingers nearby. When bloodied, it uses Declare Default to restrain several Debtors and tries to force the strongest remaining opponent to negotiate. It fights to the death if someone possesses its original ledger, but may stop attacking a creature that offers it a genuine name or fulfills a clearly stated bargain.
DM Tips
- Telegraph the danger with fresh receipts bearing the characters' names, coins nailed to nearby trees, and a barrier arm that rises before anyone touches it.
- Play the creature as painfully literal rather than purely hostile; give it a creaking, bureaucratic voice and have it pause whenever someone asks whether it is alive.
- For a weaker party, reduce Compound Interest to a maximum of 3d6 and remove the psychic damage from Receipt Hook; for a stronger party, increase Declare Default to 8d8 damage and let the barrier remain until destroyed.
- Let clever bargains matter: a character who offers a meaningful promise, repairs the road, or recovers the missing ledger can temporarily bypass combat.
Loot
- The Original Ledger — A weatherproof book listing every toll, promise, and debt recorded at Turnpike Nine. Its final page is blank except for a line awaiting the booth's true name.
- Interest-Bitten Coin — A silver coin with a bite-shaped notch. Once per day, its bearer can add 1d4 to a failed Charisma check made during a negotiation, but the coin whispers that the favor must eventually be repaid.
- Red-and-White Barrier Splinter — A finger-sized piece of the booth's living barrier arm. When placed across a doorway, it functions as a mundane bar and rattles whenever someone nearby breaks a promise.
