"The principal remains. The interest is buzzing. Please present payment." โ The last words of Mayor Elira Voss
Lore & Description
Appearance
The Indebted Hive is a towering, coffin-shaped beehive bound in blackened oak, brass corner plates, and strips of yellowed parchment. Its waxen comb glows amber from within, and thousands of copper-and-gold bees crawl over its surface in shifting columns that form words such as DUE, LATE, and FINAL NOTICE. A cracked portrait of the late beekeeper hangs beneath the entrance, its painted eyes replaced by two dark honeycomb cells. The hive moves on a roiling cushion of bees, dragging broken fences, signposts, and discarded ledgers behind it like a miser's caravan.
Behavior & Origins
When the beekeeper Odran Pell died, his hive inherited not only his apiary but also his debts, contracts, and unusually literal understanding of ownership. The queen accepted every obligation as a sacred command and transformed the colony into a wandering collector. The Indebted Hive prefers payment in honey, though it accepts labor, heirlooms, secrets, and occasionally years of a debtor's life if the contract permits it. It is unfailingly polite to those who negotiate in good faith and merciless toward those who burn its invoices. A useful hook is the ruined village of Bellwether, whose surviving residents each owe the hive a different portion of Odran Pell's impossible debt; the hive is currently demanding the return of a silver smoker stolen by Mayor Elira Voss.
Running The Indebted Hive
Tactics
The hive opens by issuing a Debt Seal to the most dangerous-looking foe, then uses Release the Arrears when several creatures cluster near it. It keeps flying enemies at range with Invoice Sting while using Comb Ram to shove melee attackers into hazardous terrain or away from allies. When bloodied, it retreats through narrow spaces and forces enemies to pursue through its bee cloud; it never fights to the death unless someone threatens its queen or attempts to destroy its contracts.
DM Tips
- Telegraph the encounter with fresh honey trails, nailed invoices bearing the characters' names, and villagers arguing over debts they never knew they owed.
- Play the hive as a fussy, formal creditor: it pauses combat to quote clauses, requests signatures, and becomes genuinely offended by unpaid interest rather than by insults.
- If the party is struggling, reduce Release the Arrears to 6d6 damage and remove the poison damage from Comb Ram; for a stronger party, let the hive relocate immediately when destroyed and give it 20 temporary hit points after reforming.
- Debtbound Relocation should create a recurring antagonist, not negate the party's victory. Let the characters discover how to settle the keeper's estate, destroy the original contract, or locate the queen before the next reformation.
Loot
- The Original Ledger — A beeswax-sealed book listing Odran Pell's debts and creditors. It includes several powerful people who would pay dearly to have their obligations erased, as well as the loophole that can permanently end the hive's relocation.
- Queen's Amber Cell — A thumb-sized piece of glowing royal comb containing a preserved drop of the queen's honey. It can be sold for 150 gp, or brewed into a potion that grants advantage on one Wisdom saving throw against fear.
- Brass Smoker of Pell — A dented beekeeper's smoker engraved with the words PAYMENT DUE. When lit, it can calm ordinary bees and grants advantage on one Animal Handling check involving insects each day.
