"Please don't make him go away. He is waiting." โ Elian Vale, written in frost on a chapel window
Lore & Description
Appearance
Morrow is a squat, lopsided snowman made from three uneven spheres of gray-white snow. Its stick arms are bent like pleading fingers, its coal eyes glow with a dim amber light, and a child's red scarf is frozen around its neck beneath a crust of rime. One side of its face is melted and rebuilt again and again, preserving the impression of a tear-streaked smile. A cracked tin pail sits atop its head, while a single blue button marks the place where its heart would be.
Behavior & Origins
Morrow was built by Elian Vale, a grieving child who made the snowman beside his mother's empty grave and named it after the brother he had lost. When Elian vanished during an overnight blizzard, his refusal to accept another loss sank into the snowman and gave it motion. Morrow now wanders wherever winter touches the Vale family lands, attacking those who try to clear the snow or disturb the grave. The truth is that Elian did not die: he was taken by an ice hag called Aunt Veyra and remains trapped in a mirror beneath the old bell tower. Morrow wants only to keep the grave untouched until Elian comes home. A creature can truly harm Morrow by learning and sincerely acknowledging what it was: not a monster, but a child's memorial to a lost brother.
Running Morrow, the Unmelted Snowman
Tactics
Morrow begins by using Coal-Eye Glare against the most isolated or emotionally vulnerable-looking target, then closes in with Packed-Fist attacks. It uses Whiteout Burst when surrounded and Snowbound Lurch to escape fire or reposition beside a grave, doorway, or frightened child. Until someone voices a true understanding of its origin, Morrow fights relentlessly; once that understanding is spoken, it becomes defensive and attempts to flee toward the bell tower rather than fight to the death.
DM Tips
- Telegraph Morrow's nature with a child's drawings, a red scarf visible beneath the snow, and footprints that lead from a grave to the monster and back again.
- Play Morrow as silent but expressive: it tilts its coal eyes toward family keepsakes, shields children's graves, and writes simple words such as HOME or WAIT in the snow.
- A true memory need not be exact history; it must show genuine understanding of the memorial's purpose, such as recognizing that Morrow was built to preserve love rather than to attack.
- For a weaker party, reduce its hit points to 70 and remove Catch the Falling Snow; for a stronger party, increase its regeneration to 15 hit points and let Whiteout Burst recharge on a 4-6.
Loot
- Elian's Red Scarf — A child's wool scarf frozen stiff with enchantment. It remains cold even beside a fire and can be used to locate the old Vale graveyard.
- Blue Heart-Button — The button at Morrow's center, warm only when someone speaks kindly of the dead. It bears the initials E.V. and serves as proof of Morrow's true origin.
- Tin Pail of Winter Memories — The dented hat contains small charcoal drawings of Elian, his brother, and the snowman. Studying them reveals the route to Aunt Veyra's mirror beneath the bell tower.
