"I was flawed in life. You will help me become magnificent in death." โ The inscription beneath Sir Aldren's sealed tomb
Lore & Description
Appearance
This unsettling funeral effigy resembles a broad-shouldered knight carved from pale marble, but its proportions are subtly wrong: the arms are too long, the helmet's face is stretched into a permanent noble sneer, and iron seams run across its body like healed wounds. Tarnished gold leaf clings to its sculpted armor. A real sword hangs at its hip, its blade darkened by grave dust and black fingerprints. Inside the slit of its visor burns a dim blue light, while small trophiesโteeth, buttons, feathers, rings, scraps of skin, and stranger thingsโare threaded onto cords around its waist.
Behavior & Origins
The Improved Knight was carved as the funeral effigy of Sir Aldren Vey, a vain champion who commissioned a monument meant to preserve him as the perfect warrior. When Aldren died disgraced, the funerary magic absorbed his final obsession: that death had merely revealed flaws that could be corrected. The effigy rose from its tomb convinced that it is Sir Aldren reborn, perfected by stone, and now tests every living creature for weaknesses it can remove from itself. It is currently seeking the 'last improvement,' a trophy taken from a worthy hero whose name appears on an inscription inside the abandoned Chapel of Saint Orra. The knight politely challenges travelers, catalogues their habits, and becomes increasingly offended when they refuse to acknowledge its identity.
Running The Improved Knight
Tactics
The Improved Knight opens by using Pronouncement of Improvement on the most dangerous-looking enemy, then advances on a frightened target with two Graveblade attacks. It uses Funeral Gauntlet to hold a mobile or lightly armored foe in place while displaying trophies to intimidate nearby enemies. When bloodied, it abandons restraint and pursues the creature it considers the most worthy trophy; it fights to the death unless someone convincingly claims to possess a superior version of its own identity.
DM Tips
- Telegraph the creature with a trail of neatly arranged trophies, each labelled with the victim's name and a supposed 'improvement' learned from them.
- Roleplay it as courtly, precise, and deeply offended by casual language; it pauses after every attack to critique the target's posture.
- For a weaker party, remove Corrective Parry and reduce its hit points to 75; for a stronger party, let Collected Improvements grant two benefits at once after it claims a trophy.
- Make the collection matter socially: returning a victim's trophy to their family or discovering Sir Aldren's true disgrace can give the characters leverage before combat.
Loot
- The Collection of Corrections — A dozen labelled trophies from earlier victims, including a signet ring belonging to a missing noble. Returning them can resolve several unanswered disappearances and expose the knight's route.
- Aldren's Blackened Graveblade — The ceremonial sword becomes a +1 longsword when cleaned and consecrated, but it occasionally whispers unsolicited critiques of its wielder's technique.
- The Effigy Inscription — A removable marble plaque records the name of the sculptor, the hidden tomb, and a final line revealing that Sir Aldren died after abandoning his comrades.
