"You were warned by the blank space." โ Ilyra Venn, final note in the Ninth Margin survey book
Lore & Description
Appearance
The Errata of the Ninth Margin resembles a tall, narrow person cut from several mismatched maps. Its skin is yellowed vellum stretched over angular bones, its joints are bound with red thread, and rivers of wet black ink pulse beneath its surface. A compass rose has opened where its face should be, with a single needle swiveling toward the nearest trespasser. Its fingers end in brass map pins, and a leather ledger hangs from its ribs like a second, external heart.
Behavior & Origins
The Errata was born when the surveyor Ilyra Venn accidentally drew a valley that did not exist, then inked the name Bellweather Hollow beside it. The map was copied, sold, and followed by travelers until the error acquired shape, borders, and a furious sense of ownership. The creature now claims the abandoned survey station called Ninth Margin as its capital and records every visitor in its ledger. It especially hates anyone carrying a map that depicts the hollow incorrectly. The party is already written in the book beneath the heading: "Arrivals to be Corrected."
Running Errata of the Ninth Margin
Tactics
The Errata begins by using Pin the Location against the most mobile character, then closes on the creature listed in its ledger. It uses Misleading Boundaries and Turn the Page to fight around corners, maps, and narrow passages while Redraw the Road separates the party. When reduced below half its hit points, it abandons direct attacks and tries to flee toward Ninth Margin; if cornered there, it fights to destroy the party's maps and ledger before dying.
DM Tips
- Telegraph the danger with road signs pointing in contradictory directions, footprints that end at blank parchment, and the party's names written in fresh ink on an old survey marker.
- Give the Errata a precise, offended voice; it corrects pronunciations, distances, and claims of ownership during combat.
- For a weaker party, remove the psychic damage from the List of Trespassers and reduce Redraw the Road to 2d6 force damage.
- For a stronger party, let Misleading Boundaries extend 15 feet and allow the Errata to use Turn the Page once each round without spending a bonus action.
Loot
- The Ninth Margin Ledger — A stitched list of every visitor to Bellweather Hollow, including several names belonging to people who have not yet arrived. A name can be crossed out with a successful DC 15 Intelligence (Arcana) check, ending the Errata's advantage against that creature.
- Brass Surveyor's Compass — The compass points toward the nearest place omitted from the current map. Its needle becomes still near hidden roads, forgotten ruins, and magically concealed locations.
- Error Map of Bellweather Hollow — A living map that changes when folded. Once per day, its bearer can ask it to reveal a safe route through a mapped wilderness, granting advantage on one group Wisdom (Survival) check.
